Given we are in the Homeland Security market, I wanted to share this public service announcement from the United Nations as they celebrate their 60th anniversary. I think sometimes it's easy to forget about the politics or policies that may drive a need for security products around the world as we get busy with our lives in this industry and this video helps bring some of that full circle.
Network Video Technologies (NVT) is the "Kleenex Brand" of the UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) market for video security. NVT manufacturers baluns that convert analog video signals allowing either video, power and data to be transmitted over ordinary, unshielded telephone wire. There is a wide range of products to choose from dependent on your video transmission needs and wire selection.
Think IP Cameras and NVR technology are hurting NVT's business? Well their business keeps increasing year after year. What's one of the reason for this? Integrators are using NVT's transmitters and receivers in new installations so a migration path is available for a full-blown IP camera system down the road......not to mention the labor cost savings over installing potentially heavy coax cable.
So how does this all work? Check out this diagram of a typical application of NVT's NV-16PS10-PVD (16-Channel Power Supply Cable Integrator Hub):
NVT's PVD Hub, with the proper transmitter at the camera end, allows up to 16 cameras per hub to be powered and the video transmitted over, let's say, a CAT-5e cable. Installers are planning on using this same cable structure down the road when they migrate the customer from analog over to IP.
A few tips.......to help protect yourself with future IP camera and NVR technology it's recommended to use CAT-6 if possible (CAT-5e at a minimum given where everything is headed these days). Equally important....an IP camera can only be transmitted about 300 feet away from the network switch, so watch your UTP cable runs and plan ahead for any necessary IDFs! Doesn't mean you can't transmit a camera over 3,000 feet of UTP with NVT today, just means to have the necessary points planned to build in your IT network later.
See NVT's website for additional information on NVT applications and technical data.
Did you know that for every 10° rise in temperature over 85°F, the life of your digital equipment is reduced by approximately 40%?
With a critical investment in Digital Video Recording it is very important to also invest in the proper storage and racking equipment. Middle Atlantic Products is a leading manufacturer in thermal management. At the ISC West show in Las Vegas they showcased their High CFM Rear Door System, perfect for any DVR/NVR solution like Pelco's ENDURA NVR. This system allows heat to effectively be drawn up and away from your equipment.
Justin Tilley from Middle Atlantic gives us a great demonstration on the product's capabilities. (Smoke is used to simulate the heat's path).
Meet Bob Newhuis, Sr. Director of Sales for Middle Atlantic Products, as he takes us on a tour of Middle Atlantic's Booth at the 2008 ISC West Conference in Las Vegas. Bob gives us a demo on the latest LCD Monitoring/ Command Desk series. Lots of accessory and color options available with this series and a great choice for providing comfort and improved efficiency for security personnel.
The LCD Monitoring / Command is equally suited for small to large-scale command and control environments, LCD Monitoring are optimized for flat screens and ergonomically designed with the user in mind.
Somebody with a lot of skill or an incredible amount of time on their hands or both, figured out how to make 10 Pelco Espirit PTZs dance in a choreographed fashion displayed at a recent tradeshow. No clue on how he or she did this but it's impressive.....
Meet Umberto Malesci, President of FluidMesh Networks, who originally is from Italy and a graduate the very prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA.
FluidMesh offers an easy to use Wireless Mesh Networking product that is Ethernet based so you can plug in IP cameras or analog cameras provided you use a video encoder. The great thing about FluidMesh is that it was designed around video security applications in order to avoid latency issues.
Watch Umberto discuss how the products are unique to the market and the topology around a wireless mesh system. This video was taken in FluidMesh's booth at ISC West 2008 in Las Vegas, NV.

Todd Dunning shows us Pelco's New Public View Monitor. This unique monitor is great for retail as it allows customized marketing messages to be displayed in addition to being a security monitor. There's a built-in motion detector to toggle between the two features or you can run both with Picture-in-Picture mode. This is a great monitor for retail applications, schools and even banks.
As a global leader in video security systems, Pelco has developed complete solutions to help law enforcement agencies ensure both community and officer safety. This video demonstrates the citywide network of Police camera systems linked by fiber optics to the Clovis, California Police Department. Officers can control Pelco Spectra PTZ cameras, view live video or search archived footage from their desks, dispatch center, mobile command center and patrol cars. Some Pelco products being used in the system: DX8100 DVR, CM9760 Matrix System, Spectra PTZ dome cameras, EspiritTI - Thermal Imaging Camera, and PelcoNets for IP video transmission.
